How LED Light Therapy Benefits Patients with Recalcitrant Psoriasis?

If you've ever dealt with psoriasis's constant itch and undesirable scales, you know it's more than just a skin condition; it's a battle for comfort and confidence. Traditional treatments are frequently associated with negative side effects and limited effectiveness, particularly in severe situations. However, LED light therapy offers a ray of hope, a breakthrough that could change the way we treat psoriasis. ROJO Light Therapy is enthused about this light therapy's potential for transforming lives, particularly for individuals suffering from recalcitrant psoriasis.

Understanding Psoriasis and Its Challenges

While overtly an epidermal disease, psoriasis is an immune-mediated disorder that profoundly impacts the sufferer’s quality of life, as this disease is characterised by itchiness and scaly skin. Historically, medication for the disease has ranged from topical agents to systemic drugs,  with each having its own host of drawbacks.

The use of phototherapy has long been a mainstay, in which treatment with UV light not only provides relief but also carries the risk of long-term side effects through skin cancers. The facet of the study that interested us most was what impact harnessing light sources that weren’t UV would make.

The Science Behind LED Light Therapy

The study at the Los Angeles Dermatology Centre concentrated on the anti-inflammatory effects of two specific wavelengths: near-infrared at 830 nm and visible red at 633 nm. These wavelengths were chosen based on the published results indicating efficacy in treating inflammatory skin conditions and the healing of wounds.

The near-infrared light at 830 nm penetrates deeper into the tissue, increases local blood flow, and stimulates the release of endogenous opioids, which are natural pain reducers and can also decrease itching. The 633 nm red light acts at the superficial part of the skin and can reduce inflammation, as well as promote cellular regeneration.

For the standard 5-week treatment regimen consisting of 10 sessions, the researchers examined the effects of infrared light on nine patients suffering from recalcitrant psoriasis, defined as patients who did not respond to conventional medical approaches.

Discussing the Results

The results of this pilot study were encouraging, as all nine patients completed the course of treatment. None of the patients experienced any adverse or unwanted effects after the treatment. Changes in symptom severity demonstrated high levels of patient satisfaction. LED light therapy treatment shows good results by itself and could serve as an alternative or additional adjunct treatment for psoriasis.

  • Anti-inflammatory Effects: Both wavelengths of LED therapy reduce and modulate inflammation. The reduction in inflammation eliminates the painful and itchy symptoms and inhibits the progression of the lesions.
  • Cellular Regeneration: As red light stimulates skin cells to start growing again and proliferating, this rapidly regenerates new skin cells, and accelerates the healing of psoriatic lesions.
  • Increased Blood Flow and Lymphatic Drainage: Near-infrared light penetrates deeply into tissue and expands blood vessels and circulation, promoting the elimination of inflammatory mediators and reducing pain.

Towards a Brighter Future

This study suggests that LED light therapy has promising outcomes that could revolutionise

safe, effective, and non-invasive psoriasis treatment, particularly for cases resistant to conventional methods.
